Double Manual Timber Up & Over
Double Manual Timber Up & Over
Timber remains a popular option for a garage door, bringing warmth and style to many properties. As an up and over door it is an easy option to buy and use. The best advice is to buy it pre-finished if any advice can be given on timber.
What is a basic up and over door?
The basic manual double retractable doors available offer around six standard sizes to cover most single garage openings in the UK. Some larger intermediate sizes are available at extra cost. When we refer to a basic up and over door we refer to the simpler designs and in standard factory colour finishes with no window options. All the up and over doors we provide are of the highest quality and manufactured to the highest standard, regardless of being basic in their design.
Price
Expect to pay between £3,300 and £6,200 inc. VAT installed.
This price includes:
- One-off installation
- Fully retractable operating gear
- Basic cedar door design
- Standard factory stain finish
Details such as trimming around the door frame, weatherseals on the ground and upgrades on the locking will push the price up slightly.
This category for a price range refers to a door with retractable operating mechanism with a standard factory stain finish. It also includes all the hardware required as well as a steel box section outer fixing frame to replace any timber frame used, providing a better overall operation and a 10 year guarantee.
Our basic and traditional designs generally still include a 2 point rod locking system (not cable locking). They nearly always have the strong box section steel fixing sub frame to ensure continuity and the door operating with the tightest possible tolerances. A timber sub frame is generally used if the timber door panel is of a traditional build, with joinery build methods so the timber sub frame complements or matches the door panel exactly. It is also possible to clad the front of a steel sub frame for aesthetics.

Colours and Finishes
For this price example we are referring to a standard factory finish, which is highly recommended for a more professional and fully coated final finish. Generally, there is a good choice of traditional timber finishes and all using a very high quality microporous wood stain treatment.
Be aware of the surrounding sub frame with a timber door. Whilst you can have a white or brown finished steel sub frame, with a lot of the timber door panels, many of the more traditional door panel constructions are best used with a matching timber sub frame.
Security
The basic locking on a manual timber up and over door is a 2 point steel rod and slam latch locking system with the handle locked via a euro profile cylinder. You can usually upgrade to 4 point locking for around £60 and then you have each corner covered with a latch.
Ease of Use
Being a manual door, you have to operate by hand. This involves simply grabbing the handle and turning to unlatch. The door is the lifted which is assisted by a torsion spring inside at the top of the door on canopy gear, and side springs for retractable gear.
Adjusted properly, the operation is quite easy but might be a challenge for a more frail or elderly person. This is because operation does involve bending down and taking the door panel above head height both in opening and closing.
We would usually advise to pay for the retractable operating gear on a slightly heavier door panel to give the option of an electric motor drive if required. Retractable operating gear and additional fitting time usually adds around £100.
OUR VIEW: From 35 years of experience...
We tend to find that timber is a material you either love and have all around your home, or not!
Good quality timber garage doors will last just as long as many other materials, or possibly longer, but the correct initial treatment and ongoing cleaning is essential. You should make sure the timber can breathe naturally, which modern stains allow as a microporous treatment inside and out.
The real beauty of timber is unrepeatable in other materials in most cases, and specified correctly in the first place will give you a first class product, looking and performing well for a long time.
Many of the designs cannot be replicated in other materials. Hormann and Garador timber doors are always built in their steel sub chassis and offer a good choice of cedarwood doors at competitive prices. For other timbers look at our luxury timber doors and the Woodrite range of doors.
