Electric Timber Up & Overs
Electric Timber Up & Overs
A timber one piece up and over garage door is a great option for a property of traditional home style, bring warmth to any garage facade. Timber garage doors are mainly constructed from Cedarwood timber, but also available is Oak, Accoya, Nordic Pine and Idigbo at more cost.
When we refer to a basic up and over door, we refer to the simpler designs in cedar wood, often with marine ply backing and in standard factory finishes, with no complex design or window options.
This price range caters for a fully retractable operated mechanism with a standard colour treatment finish. It includes all the hardware required, as well as a galvanised steel box section outer fixing frame or a factory prepared for timber frame, also finished to match the door.
The electric operator will also come with hand held radio transmitters and an internal manual release, in case of a power failure. It will be a high power motor to deal with the weight of a larger door panel.
Price
Price refers to a standard size door of 14 feet wide and 2 heights - 6’6” and 7’0” (1980mm and 2134mm)
Expect to pay between £6,500 and £8,000 inc. VAT
This price includes:
- Installation
- Fully retractable operating gear
- Good, high quality, high power electric motor drive
- Basic panel design
- Choice of factory microporous finishes
Details such as trimming around the door frame, weatherseals on the ground and upgrades on the locking will push the price up slightly. You should always be aware of exactly what you are getting as a finished job, so you can compare like for like.
Our basic designs always include, as standard, a two-point rod locking system (not inferior cable locking). Although on a very basic installation this is disconnected and the electric operator does the locking, we always advise the use of a ‘security de latch’ mechanism to incorporate the manual locking, along with the locking provided by the electric operator.
To keep the installation basic and all installed within one day, we would expect there to be a separate pedestrian door access to the garage, power supply available nearby, and sufficient hanging points on the garage ceiling for the door tracks and the operator boom.

Features
Security
The basic locking on an electric timber up and over door uses the electric operator mechanism to hold the garage door panel closed firmly. However, there will be some degree of flexing if the door panel is tested by force at the bottom, especially the larger the door panel.
A small upgrade of approximately £60 - £80 is available to adapt the 2 point bottom latch steel rod and slam latch locking system, so it can be used with the electric motor drive to effectively give you 3 point active locking.
Combined with the steel outer box section fixing frame, the basic security is actually quite good.
Colours & Finishes
For this price example we are offering the standard factory finishes which are highly recommended.
Many manufacturers may offer additional timber finishes, including solid colour finishes. These are usually microporous, water-based stains used for the best longevity, always allowing the timber to breathe rather than blister under an older style oil based paint.
Ease of Use
Being an electric door, operation consists of a simple push of a button on a handheld transmitter.
It is also possible to link a lot of modern electric operator systems with a smart home system, such as from Somfy, allowing you to utilise your smart phone or tablet to control the door. If there is a power cut, you have to enter the garage by another door and release the mechanism to operate the door manually, which will be quite effortless.
If there is no other access then there is a release mechanism which is attached to the handle or drilled into the panel as a key release mechanism with cable attachment.
OUR VIEW: from 35 years of experience...
Most customers either love timber.. or tend to avoid it!
Timber can be a great material if it is specified and treated correctly in the first place. It is repairable and can last for many years, often longer than inferior steel doors. The up and over door mechanism will usually last many, many years with no issues at all.
Manufacturers such as Hormann and Garador make the very best up and over timber doors for the UK, from basic to luxury models. This is achieved with high quality galvanised and zinc plated components for durability and confidence in the overall integrity.
Always try to buy with the steel fixing sub frame or the factory prepared and finished timber frame options as it will give a far better overall package, as well as better security and weather protection.
The only downside with a retractable up and over door is that they do swing out a fair way during operation.
