Security Tips to Prevent Burglary
In 2016, there was an estimated 617,000 ‘household theft’ incidents across England and Wales (Crime in England and Wales Survey, 2016). These numbers don’t make for comfortable reading, but a few simple strategies can help to improve your security, and discourage the attention of would-be intruders.
Burglars are often looking for a ‘sure thing’. If a house seems empty, poorly secured and full of valuables then it is much more likely to be targeted. By adding levels of inconvenience and protection, criminals will be discouraged from focussing on your property.
Burglars are often searching for signs to suggest a house is empty, that the occupants are abroad or away for example. This can manifest in a number of ways; littered driveways, overfilled letterboxes, unlit homes in the evening, curtains unchanged. To combat this, consider asking a neighbour, friend or family member to visit your house every two days (or so) to clear the post and any potential litter.
Social media is another possible clue for criminals. Refrain from posting about long periods of planned absence, as this may indicate a house is ripe for burglary at this time. For example, if you are excited to share your holiday snaps, wait until you’re home to post them.
There are also some simple strategies you can employ even when you are home! Keep curtains and blinds closed at night, and avoid leaving valuables in plain view that practiced burglars may note when conducting reconnaissance.
Lighting is a major deterrent. Motion-sensor-activated lighting on your driveway can ensure that nobody can approach your property undetected, especially at night when burglary is more likely. If possible, a security gate is recommended, as this can prevent a thief from ever approaching your property.
When it comes to garages, investing in security is a worthwhile pursuit. If your garage is old, damaged or flimsy, consider investing in a replacement. New doors come with a whole range of benefits, with security as a leading example of this. Modern developments within the industry have improved garage door security dramatically over the last few years. Some doors are certified as ‘Secured By Design’, only given to the most secure of doors.
Garages often contain valuable tools, a target for theft, but also potential utensils for breaking into the rest of your home. Prevent this from happening by investing in your homes security, and in a new garage door.
