Q:What do the up and over door sizes mean for ordering purposes?
The ordering sizes for any up and over garage door refer to the dimensions INSIDE the fixing sub frame used.
With any up and over garage door you need a fixing sub frame and that can be either timber or steel. Steel is used on the majority of replacement and new doors now with timber being used generally only with timber garage door panels to match the 2 together.
The dimensions inside the sub frame are the ordering sizes referred to in price lists and on websites. For example a 7' x 7' order reference is the frame opening size and the sub frame size has to be taken into the equation for installing. With a 7' x 7' order size (2134mm x 2134mm) and with a Hormann standard steel sub frame the door and frame size would be 2275mm wide and 2191mm high. The most common mistake made is to order an up and over garage door and forget the sub frame measurements!
For any purpose made size up and over garage door it is best to give the overall frame dimensions if ordering with a steel sub frame but still refer to the inside frame dimensions with the order. Sub frame dimensions will vary in size between manufacturers and also between single and double width size doors so attention must be paid to this if you are setting out brickwork for a new garage for example.
