Q:What are the timber garage doors built from?
The majority of timber garage doors in the UK are produced using cedar wood, a light weight and very stable timber excellent for use outside and particularly useful for our very varied and moist climate
The timber garage doors produced in cedar wood are manufactured in the main by only a very small handful of specialist companies based in the UK.
You can still purchase softwood and hardwood timber garage doors from European manufacturers in sectional, up and over and round the corner mechanisms, these will be using composite pine options, hemlock and more exotic timbers such as larch, oak, mahogany, iroko and meranti. These heavier timber species are generally only available in limited sizes for up and over or sectional because of the weights involved and more flexible in use on round the corner type systems where the weight is not such an issue in the door operation.
Rundum Meir offer excellent timber round the corner and side sectional timber doors all bespoke in size and design once you have chosen a timber species for your door.
In the UK you can have timber doors manufactured readily in cedar, european oak and idigbo from main stream specialist manufacturers and you may well see plenty of lower quality basic softwood (generally redwood) timber doors with very high know contents and a very real tendency to warp or split quite easily, sold through the internet, Ebay and other price driven outlets. Be very careful here as you will honestly be buying again in the not too distant future and also be aware of the prices not including furniture, fixing sub frames and other items which are usually included in prices from main stream manufacturers such as Woodrite or Cedar Doors.
We have dealt with timber garage doors since 1986 and can always help you with your specification and assist in offering the best mechanism for the size required and there are many options with the mechanisms, and this can affect the end result whether the door is manual or electric operated.
The method of construction for the door panel also varies considerably from a traditional all timber construction with mortice and tenon joints and the like to a steel box section chassis with the timber panel merely a decorative insert but making a door which is very stable and strong. There are options in between too so it is worth inviting some time in finding the best option for you.
