Bespoke Timber Side Hinged Doors
Bespoke Timber Side Hinged Doors
We can offer timber doors in European Oak, Accoya, Iroko, Idigbo, Sapele and the staple timber for many years which has been Cedarwood, now possibly more out of favour because of massive price hikes recently making previously more expensive hardwoods seem a better option.
Accoya, Iroko and Idigbo are generally the most favoured because of their natural durability as hardwood species and the doors we are talking about here are built using traditional joinery methods and always to have a matching timber fixing sub frame. The timber is all well seasoned for stability and all crafted in house with modern woodworking machinery to produce accurate final results in the components before assembly.
Timber has the ability to outlast most other building materials such as steel or aluminium if treated correctly in the first place and also being cared for over the years, generally just by cleaning as you should for anything else outside.
If timber doors are damaged they can generally be repaired quite easily and the longevity is unaffected but timber is very durable indeed, especially in the hardwoods mentioned so any damage tends to be superficial anyway and a paint touch up at the worst.
Price
Expect to pay between £4,500 and £8,000 inc. VAT for a pair of solid hardwood timber side hinged doors installed and including a fixing sub frame in the same timber species and a very high quality set of furniture and locking.
Our joinery made hardwood timber doors are usually 55m thick sections with all timber boards between around 20 - 25mm thick.
We would highly recommend the factory finishing for any bespoke timber doors unless you might be looking for natural weathering, a specific finish preferred by some to match in with natural weathering on other timbers used on the project outside.
Modern finishes are very good and we tend to use the Teknos system which offers solid colours as well as translucent finishes to show the beauty of the natural wood graining.
The 4 main finishes can be summarised as Untreated, Oiled, Stained or Painted and the timber species chosen often gives preference to the final treatment suggestion.
EXTRAS: Windows, external design elements, higher security locking systems and additional timer cladding or trimming will always drive the price up.
Always be aware of exactly what you are getting as a quoted finished job to compare like for like.

COLOURS AND FINISHES
There are some beautiful timber finishes in the oiling, staining or paint treatments for hardwood timber doors. The criteria is usually allowing the timber to breathe naturally and adapt to moisture and temperature changes in the climate. Modern high quality external treatments allow timber to be as durable as possible even though some timber species can be untreated and not have any issues.
SECURITY
A solid pair of hardwood timber side hinged doors are going to be very secure as long as the locking and furniture is of a high quality and good specification, possibly including additional deadlocks for use as a holiday status when you are away for long periods of time. Any windows specified need to ideally use double glazed units and have security features on the glass used as well.
EASE OF USE
It really does not get much easier than a pair of side hinged doors with the biggest enemy perhaps being strong winds but we always include door stays on heavy side hinged doors unless you need extended opening past 90 degrees.
Side hinged doors can be made automatic using various methods. For lighter weight and smaller sizes doors you can use an adapted boom type electric operator which is a ceiling mounted system simply pushing and pulling the door leaves open and closed. Mre sophisticated options can use what are effectively gate operators either underground or surface mounted at low or high level and generally hydraulic and very powerful so have no problem moving side hinged garage doors and then offering security from the locking of the drive units themselves.
OUR VIEW: from 35 years of experience...
Side hinged doors are about as traditional as it gets for a door type and are perfect for so many garages where access is not required very often but when it is it is usually on foot.
We have seen a resurgence over the last 10 years for side hinged garage doors and it is mainly down to the change in use for a lot of garages. Obviously side hinged doors are only really suitable for single width garages up to about 9 feet wide but that is most garages covered anyway.
Whilst these basic single skin steel doors are good it is not too much of a step up to a far higher specification and performance with a new wave of double skinned steel garage doors which have insulation, high security and some great designs and colours too. We are finding a lot of people are expecting the sort of performance that their front door might give and this can only be achieved with a double skinned door and a level floor in the first place.
When the garage may not be attached to the house and insulation is not important then single skin steel side hinged doors offer a great solution and are very practical too in all ways.
