Most double width entrances are between about 3.5m and 4.5m when a double set of entrance swing gates are used. The resulting drive through width is fine for any vehicle but usually will be less if the leaves sit at a 90 degree angle when open. You will lose the leaf panel depth and the hinge gap too, probably about 300mm overall across an average width.
The heights are usually between about 1.7m and 2.1m for any flat top solid gates, unless they are a swept arch design... The price variation is because of size and style, but also down to the large variables in the groundwork and other work required, all depending on your existing driveway entrance details.

Aluminium is now the preferred material of choice for many customers in 2024, but the construction and design are still very important to get right, with so many budget aluminium stock designs currently on the market in the UK. Many come from France, Spain and Portugal where the gates are generally a lot smaller, so when simply scaled up for the UK market, often don’t work as well.
A properly specified and built aluminium gate could turn even the biggest timber joinery fan to consider not using timber. The modern bespoke aluminium gate can be made to almost any design you want, even incorporating design elements such as glazing. Sliding systems require less emphasis on their structural integrity over swinging leaf systems, so the designs can always be far more ambitious with less restrictions over a gate panel which has to support itself when swinging open and closed.
All our aluminium gates are prepared and manufactured entirely in the UK using the most modern methods of preparation for the painting and finishing but also are welded and bonded depending on the design and not just screwed or bolted together like budget gates will be. These eventually just start to come apart gradually with exposed unpainted sections and failure in the leaf stability.

Expect to pay between £12,000 and £16,000 for the complete and professional installation of a wide range of bespoke aluminium swing gates in various designs, but bespoke sizes, with steel or aluminium support posts, electric automation equipment with relevant access controls and most importantly, the required safety detection systems for total compliance in the UK with basic regulations and law. This isn’t an option, we do not install remote control automatic gates in domestic or commercial applications without safety detection systems, they would not be legal in the UK.
This price would be for a pair of solid design, aluminium gates with a choice of various designs available as well as a choice of solid painted or woodgrain finishes for the gate leaves and support posts.
The electric motors can be above ground, piston type drive units, or underground motor units depending on other factors on site and with the gate design and size.
Controls would normally be 2 remote handsets and basic keypad entry system as a minimum, but of course there are so many other access control options, including smartphone or GSM control through your mobile phone where you can also take the call from the gate anywhere with or without a camera system built in.

Advances in powder coating and painting processes generally have meant the colour options and finishes for high quality aluminum gates are the best they have ever been.
Solid colours, pastel colours, Farrow and Ball colours, almost any colour can be achieved, but also now some incredible wood grain finishes too, all with excellent guarantees on their durability.
Strength and Stability
Traditional welding or a cold-weld polyurethane adhesive assembly process is used on our aluminium gates, the same process as used in high end car manufacturing. All relevant sections are reinforced where the chosen automation method is to be attached with cold weld corners having over 2,600 lbs per square inch of holding power.

Modern manufacturing with aluminium profiles means you can almost design anything you want with an aluminium driveway gate leaf. Solid, open or a mix of both in a design and with additional elements such as stainless steel inserts or maybe even glazed sections with different glazing inserts?

When it comes to electric operated aluminium entrance gates you cannot really afford to compromise. Budget stock aluminium gates can fail through their inadequate strength and swing gates have far more pressures exerted during operation, so high winds can affect the operation if the automation equipment isn’t strong enough to deal with the pressures. If you are looking for high quality, bonded or welded aluminium entrance gates then we can assist, but they will never be a budget gate system.
Making entrance gates electrically operated isn’t just bolting on some electro mechanical or hydraulic drive units, it is specifying the gate to work with the right equipment and making sure the gates are built to take the stresses and strains too. It is building a machine which has harmonious working parts to ensure the best result every time it is operated.
Worryingly, we also still see high numbers of electric entrance gates sold without safety devices and this is not legal in the UK. It is dangerous and irresponsible of the users, with high stakes should there be an accident or worse.
