Hinged Garage Doors - built for the 21st Century

There are many reasons why you might have an insulated garage door of any kind on your garage, however a side-hinged door in particular would offer you the very best in convenience if you use your garage as a workshop office, gym, or other function, besides putting a vehicle inside.

Side-hinged doors allow you to open and close just one door leaf, and when closed they maintain excellent insulation and security levels. The doors are sealed around the sides and the top, with the integral aluminium sub frame included as standard.

The insulation is really just one feature with strength, stability and robust overall construction meaning they are also very secure, even as standard doors, but you have the option of upgraded locking too. The panels allow the use of higher grade components.

All this is possible because of the basic 40mm thick, insulated, twin walled steel door panels, manufactured to the highest standard in Germany.

Click for Side Hinged Door Design InspirationFor the very best in panel strength, security and insulation, look no further than the superb insulated, steel side-hinged garage door range from market-leaders Teckentrup (known as Teckentrup in Germany with the Carteck brand used in the UK).

Teckentrup are now well known for high quality, insulated, double skinned steel hinged doors, but also for their fantastic insulated sectional garage door range; the door panels that are used for the side hinged doors are derived from the insulated, double skinned steels panels of the sectional garage doors. In Germany the Teckentrup manufacturing plant produce many different types of side hinged doors and the Teckentrup side hinged range has been developed specifically for the UK garage market in sizes, colours and styles available.

Teckentrup manufacture superb, made to order, side hinged doors that offer high levels of security and insulation. Alongside this, you can design your own door. They are a door which gives peace of mind once closed and locked, which is important these days.

Why Insulated Side Hinged Doors?

Most people who purchase a side-hinged garage door do so because they use their garage for other purposes other than storing their vehicle, or they have obstructions internally and maybe they have always had outward opening doors anyway?

Many garages may be used as a workshop, games room, gym, office or perhaps a simple storage areas for bikes or household items. As access to these items may be frequent, often with the garage’s direct access to the main home through an internal door, security is a very important factor to consider, as well as the benefits of high levels of insulation. The insulated door panels will help maintain an even temperature inside your garage all year round. Doors with windows will give natural light into the garage.

Door Design Choices

The Teckentrup side hinged doors are available in several different standard door panel designs, each design having options available for a smooth, woodgrain embossed, stucco or micrograin surface finish for the finer details of external visual appearance. You have very minimal, modern and smooth door panels and then very traditional 40s style vertically boarded style doors with traditional windows in the top section. Add a wide variety of different window options in rectangular, square and even round shapes and you can truly design your own style if required.

All designs have a 50/50 split as standard and there are 1/3rd and 2/3rd options to offer a smaller pedestrian door for easier access; the only design that cannot be offered with is the Georgian design with the taller, vertical panels, as the design is restrictive.

Traditional Garage Doors with Modern Engineering

The latest ranges of traditional designs from Teckentrup offer beautiful garage door designs which are very popular for so many homes.

The tough twin walled panels are strong enough to take large window sections in the top half and replicate 40s style garage doors as used in many parts of the UK and still very much in demand.

Double glazed window units with options for the actual glazing and frames in durable and maintenance free composite material, prefinished to match or contrast the main door panels.

Solid 40mm Twin Walled Panels

The Teckentrup steel side hinged doors are constructed from 40mm thick, interlocking, CFC free foam-filled, galvanised steel panels, that provide excellent levels of sound reduction, insulation and incredible strength, especially when assembled with the outer sub frame.Teckentrup 40mm Side Hinged Garage Door Panel

These doors have a real luxury feel to them, with solid door leaves and very tight tolerances when closed for the best all round weathersealing.

The mitred door leaf and door frame are finished in a matching high quality factory finish. Standard white, various Trend and RAL colours, as well as woodgrain effect laminate finishes are all offered for you to choose from for the external finish. The door panels are always RAL 9002 off white to the inside face, for maximum light enhancement and practical purposes.

The inside face of the door panels are also very easy to keep clean and have no unsightly bracing bars and locking mechanisms unlike single skin steel and timber constructed door panels.

Aluminium Fixing Sub Frame

All Teckentrup side hinged doors are factory fitted with a fully finished, aluminium, extruded, fixing sub frame to make installation easy and far more precise on site, requiring the door and sub frame to be positioned into place, squared and secured. They are manufactured to an exacting standard in a factory environment to ensure continuity of quality and specification. The door and frame combined is referred to as a ‘doorset’ and this means standards and certifications of performance can be a constant achieved standard.

The doors are all made to order, ensuring a perfect fit and to maximise the width and height of your garage opening. We also now offer some standard limited size options for a faster delivery, but also to provide better prices in limited colour options and styles. Please ask for details.

The sub frame is finished in the same colour as the door panel colour chosen except in the case of the laminate foil woodgrain panels, where a complimentary RAL paint colour is used for the framework.

High Quality Features as Standard

Stainless steel handle and double throw deadbolt
High grade stainless steel handles and lock covers are standard and offer a tough attractive finish to the overall visual appearance.
The double deadbolt locking is extra secure and the locking mechanism is situated behind a tough cover strip, fitted on the leading door panel.

Steel hinges for extra stability
High quality aluminium hinges are fitted as standard with secured hinge bolts, making it extremely difficult to lever the door open.
Easy adjustments are possible for fine-tuning the door leaf operation.
2 or 3 hinges are fitted to each leaf depending on the door size ordered.

Frame seals and door seals standard
Double seals and mitred corners make the Teckentrup side hinged doors exceptionally draught and rain proof.
In addition to a seal on every edge of the door panel, there is also rubber sealing to the aluminium fixing sub frame.

Flush bolt security
The inactive garage door leaf is secured with flush fitting bolts to the top and bottom, and at the bottom is further enhanced with the standard feature of a rot proof floor seal and threshold, further increasing the sealing properties and security of this door.

Standard door stays
Door stays are fitted as standard, protecting your door panels from slamming closed or flying open on windy days or smashing into objects or your vehicle.
These door stays are top grade spring dampened with easy adjustment and operation.
They are designed to hold the door panel open at 90 degrees.

Finished Colours

Teckentrup side hinged doors are available in a wide range of high quality standard powdercoat colours shown below and also in Golden Oak, Rosewood and Dark Oak laminate foil finishes which match very well with many Upvc or composite windows using the same finishes.

Most of the doors are available in a choice of external surface finishes which also affect the final colour effect quiet dramatically. A totally smooth surface for the steel will look quite different to an embossed woodgrain surface finish even in the exact same colour.

White (RAL9016) is the factory standard and off white (RAL9002) inside.

You can also have special RAL colours at an extra cost, please email or call for details.

External Surface Finish Options

Most door designs available have a choice for the external finish of the actual steel surface. This choice can affect light reflection and make some colours look very different from one surface to another. Smooth and woodgrain are the 2 most popular finishes.

Window Options

There are a choice of scratch proof, easy-clean window options for most of the door designs available, and they are all double sealed units to maintain the insulation and strength offered by the main door panel. Round and square windows are available for the solid panel door designs. There are standard and obvious window positions but you can also specify windows in your own position on many of the door designs offered. Create your own unique doors...

The more expensive stainless steel framed window options are very effective on modern door designs and darker colours.

Honesty Statements

Weathersealing and Water Ingress

A ‘garage door’ isn’t actually an entrance door, so some realistic expectations should be understood in terms of what you get. If you look at very standard hinged doors in either steel, GRP or timber you will find their performance is very limited indeed.

When the door is closed, light ingress is to be expected – when it’s daylight outside and your lights are off, your garage will not be pitch black. The door seals are reasonably effective at stopping light passage but will not eliminate it. This will be more pronounced generally where seals meet, on seals that are between moving sections and particularly in corners.

Where light can get in, so can a draft. With a well installed door that has seals in good condition, drafts will be minimal, but the door is not sealed completely or even pretends to offer that sort of performance

Under normal weather conditions water ingress should be minimal, but you may experience some ingress, as with light and drafts, where seals meet and in corners. Under extreme conditions, driving rain and high winds, ingress can be expected to increase. Never jet wash a door, not only may it damage the finish, but it can force open seals causing water ingress.

The threshold is also a point where water ingress may occur. Gaps between the bottom seal and the threshold arising from an uneven threshold or (in the case of side hinged garage doors) a poorly fitted threshold will allow water ingress.

If rain runoff can collect and pool at the bottom of a door instead of draining away from the door into a drainage channel, water ingress may occur. Fitting the door onto a stepped rebate behind a drainage channel is often effective in greatly reducing the likelihood of water ingress.

Colours

Trend doors are made from colour coated steel that has been tested to EN 10169. The test uses accelerated UV exposure to measure the colour fade and gloss retention over time. There are 4 ratings under EN 10169 - Ruv1 to Ruv4, with 4 being the highest rating for UV stability. Our coated steels are rated at Ruv3.

This means that over the accelerated testing, colour change or fade did not exceed 3% and gloss retention was above 60%. Ruv3 is the same rating you’ll find on many steel roofing systems, so we’re in good company. Notwithstanding the above colours will fade over time. Different coatings will fade at different rates and shade differences may appear between, for example, the frame and door panel, over an extended time period.

Dark colours should be avoided for doors with a sunny aspect. Dark colours will absorb heat from the sun’s rays that can result in differential expansion and bowing of door panels. This can cause binding of the door during operation. The door panels should return to shape when the door cools, however, under prolonged conditions, the deflection may remain.

RAL references for colours are provided as a guide only to the nearest similar RAL colour. Colours will not match to other RAL finishes due to different coating processes, gloss levels, substrates and textures. Similarly, special RAL, BS, wood effects or other colours will not be a precise match.

If you are matching to other finishes such as window frames, always request a sample to ensure the colour selected from a brochure or online is as expected. This is particularly important for wood effects such as rosewood, golden oak, night oak or Winchester.

Sea, estuary or even brackish water...

If you live near the coast in the UK, an estuary or even brackish water, the destructive capabilities of salt and sand can travel significant distances inland. Be realistic about the aspect of where your garage door will be installed. It may be several miles inland but still experience wind-borne salts and sand deposits onto the door, exposure to salt-laden damp air inside and outside the garage. Both are capable of significantly accelerating the deterioration of paint finishes and other surfaces of a garage door.

You are probably already aware of this if you have always lived by the sea and seen other external steel products deteriorate faster than normal.

An important note on side hinged garage doors...

Side hinged doors installed in coastal/high salinity environments must be fitted with a 316 Stainless Steel lever handle upgrade. Doors with standard stainless steel or black handles may experience corrosion of the handle and discolouration of the surrounding door finish. This will be excluded from warranty claims.

Manufacturer’s warranties exclude coastal areas from their warranty using phrases such as: “The guarantee does not apply to doors that are subjected to extreme conditions, e.g. corrosive influences resulting from use in a coastal climate with high salt content.”

If you are told that a warranty does include coastal areas, we strongly recommend that you request written confirmation of both the duration and the conditions of the warranty – it may just be a salesman’s ploy to secure the sale!

If a Teckentrup door fails because of a quality issue relating to workmanship or a faulty part, Teckentrup will still warrant the door in a coastal area, however if coastal conditions cause sound workmanship and materials to fail, this is outside of the design parameters of the door and is not covered by our warranty. So, yes, Teckentrup warranties exclude coastal areas if environmental factors are the cause of failure but, rather than leave it at that, the following provides sensible guidance on how you can choose Teckentrup and help limit the effects of a coastal environment.

To mitigate and reduce the effects of marine influence, a high-frequency cleaning programme is essential. If the door is in an area prone to coastal corrosion from airborne salts and sand, the door should be cleaned monthly or immediately after a weather event. The same applies to caustic substances such as bird droppings. Part opening the door to allow cleaning between sections, rubber seals and along edges is also important, as salt and sand deposited here can also have an abrasive effect in addition to its corrosive qualities – double trouble!

Furthermore, cleaning lifting gear and other metal surfaces inside the garage with a cloth soaked in a light oil, which will help protect your door from corrosion. It must be accepted that salt air is very aggressive and extra care is required.

The paint finishes and protections applied to garage door components are generally effective at delaying corrosion, but all require cleaning, irrespective of location. As a general note, no caustic, abrasive or corrosive chemicals and substances, flood water, water runoff, or runoff from lead, copper or galvanic metal flashing should be allowed to come into contact with the door.

What we recommend...

We recommend selecting products that are factory finished using pre-finished steels and aluminium, rather than designed to be finished onsite. Pre-finished coatings often have multiple layers that aid longevity. Sectional garage doors are a good choice, as their surfaces have fewer places to trap salts, are easy to clean and are made from pre-finished components.

Our side hinged garage doors are also made from prefinished steel panels and powder coated aluminium frame sections. Roller doors are not recommended as, whilst predominantly made of aluminium, which is good at resisting corrosion, have surfaces that rub together as they operate and can often collect salts in between the slats which is difficult to clean effectively.

In short, pre-finished products, such as sectional and side hinged garage doors, and a strict cleaning regime are the best route to ensure you maximise the life of your garage door in a marine environment.
