Round the corner garage doors are not a new door invention by any means. As garage doors they have been around a lot longer than more modern up and over, roller shutter and sectional doors.
Timber joinery constructed door panels sliding on various different types of rollers and bottom channels in the garage floor was always the normal arrangement for such garage doors. The door was manufactured to almost any size from various types of timber, however the bottom channel was always a weak point in the operation as it could easily fill with leaves, gravel and all types of debris which unless regularly cleaned out would upset the basic sliding operation of the door. The track would also perish unless stainless or galvanised steel options were used and replacement of perished tracks meant taking the door out completely, cutting the floor and reassembling the door.
Although today you can still buy the required hardware to enable assembly of a traditional round the corner door, the time spent installing, combined with the expense of having door panels made by a joiner makes it an expensive package indeed. Remote control automation of the system is also very difficult, if not impossible in many cases.
Now there is a complete solution available in the U.K. from one of two German manufacturers - Rundum Meir and Vertico by SWS U.K.
The garage doors are all factory produced as a complete unit assembled in a controlled environment. Both door types have a bottom tracking system which is installed onto the finished garage floor surface which also acts as a weather bar.
Rundum Meir also offer a sunken U channel version if required and the two types are shown in the diagram below, the one advantage the U channel version does have is to offer a better bottom seal with the bottom edge of the garage door closer to the finished floor level. As the door panels are top hung the bottom roller is only acting as a guide for the bottom part of the door panels.

Rundum Meir produce two main types of round the corner system and have done since 1968 - the Original Rundum Meir and the Side Sectional door. Both options can be produced in either timber or galvanised steel sections. Either system can be automated very easily and safely.
The timber types available include Norwegian Spruce, Superior Spruce, European Oak, Larch, Iroko, Mahogany and Douglas Fir.
General sizing Information
The Vertico range of aluminium doors have a maximum width of 5600mm. The Rundum Meir range of original round the corner doors can go up to very large sizes indeed. We have installed a bi-parting door 20 metres wide x 4.2 metres in height and it still operates as smoothly as a 7 foot wide door.
As these doors are all made to order then the only usual concern is sideroom and headroom although the headroom can be as little as 50mm
The sideroom ideally is about 130mm for the Vertico and 200mm plus for the Rundum, both systems are made to suit larger returns to maximise inside space in the garage. False walls and shelving are available to make use of the wall the door opens against if required.
When there is insufficient sideroom space available a false panel matching the garage door can be supplied to create enough room and still seal properly when closed.

On a double width garage you can open half way to give access to one vehicle only. |
The Vertico garage door comes as standard with radio remote control, motor drive and electronic hindrance stop. Two programmable door opening positions enable the user to have the choice of either car access or narrower pedestrian access at the simple push of a button.
The electric motor guide channel is integrated elegantly in the wall guide channel and not down the centre of the garage like most traditional motor drives.
Unlike old timber round the corner systems with channel guides cut below floor level the Vertico offers a surface mounted raised ground rail which also acts as a weather bar - not a pebble or dirt trap
The Vertico has been specifically designed as a remote control electric door system as standard with emphasis on solving all previous shortfalls in other round the corner garage door systems.
Standard Equipment available includes:
* Any size up to 5600 wide

Technical Details

This diagram shows the Vertico garage door top and bottom track detail and the small amount of headroom required to accomodate the door.
The top track fixed to the back of the lintel or the ceiling depending upon headroom available.
The bottom track can be lowered into the floor for a lower threshold if required but as standard does perform a very good weather barrier.
Vertico is made according to the new EU standards

The Vertico garage door can be specified to open in either direction and if there is not sufficient side room a false panel can be inserted.
For very large openings bi-parting doors are possible in even or uneven widths.
It is also possible to have the tracks at varying angles if required in out of square garages.
